Artificial intelligence and machine learning
Artificial intelligence and machine learning
Artificial
intelligence is entering our lives from many directions, from your smartphone
and the apps it runs to smart speakers in your home. Artificial intelligence
(AI) is also changing how we live and work.
For example,
AI can help us predict when a machine may need maintenance or a part replaced
before it breaks down. A device might recognize that the sound of the motor has
changed - or that vibrations have become irregular - before any outward signs
of trouble appear, giving engineers time to plan what needs fixing and order
replacement parts before machines go down.
Today, we are
entering an era of AI and machine learning in which we can expect to see more
systems that are smarter and more nuanced than anything seen on Earth before.
What is
artificial intelligence?
Artificial
intelligence is the science of creating machines that think like humans. It
could be as simple as a robot with a digital memory and access to the Internet,
like Pepper, Google's humanoid robot (pictured) or Boston Dynamics' Big Dog.
However, "AI" encompasses any program or system that can learn how to
solve problems without being explicitly programmed.
AI is, in
essence, the computerization of human intelligence. This can be done by performing
human-like tasks, such as playing chess and Go, or by performing tasks that are
extraordinarily complicated or require human intuition or creativity, such as
finding a cure for cancer.
Society is
evolving because artificial intelligence will become more and more a part of
our daily lives. This leads many to ask questions about how these systems will
interact with people.
For example,
there has been much speculation about what will happen if a self-driving car is
involved in an accident. Will it be responsible, even if the driver lacks a
driver's license? Could it be reprogrammed or hacked?
What are the risks of losing control of the vehicle to a machine, and how do we define "consciousness"?
AI can also
help us prevent crime through breakthroughs in artificial intelligence. These
technologies may one day recognize threats within images and video that we
can't see now. AI may also lead to breakthroughs in robotics, with new
prosthetics helping restore mobility for those who need it.
