Spiegel was born in Los Angeles, California. In his upbringing, he was brought up as an Anglican in Pacific Palisades, California. He went to Stanford University after receiving his education at the Santa Monica Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences.

Spiegel studied design while still in high school at Otis College of Art and Design and during the summer before enrolling at Stanford at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Together with that, he completed an unpaid internship in sales at Red Bull. He held a paid internship with a biomedical company while still a student and has worked as a career coach in Cape Town, South Africa, at Intuit on the TxtWeb project, and as a careers instructor elsewhere. At the age of 25, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel amassed a billion dollar fortune. Over 293 million people use Snapchat daily to transmit films and photographs that vanish. In 2011, Spiegel and Bobby Murphy, a fraternity brother from Stanford University, founded the business. With their combined ownership of around 25% of Snap, Murphy and Spiegel also control the board of directors thanks to their voting shares. In 2018, six years after his first dropout to found Snapchat, he earned a B.S. in product design from Stanford. Spiegel has contributed Snap stock worth more than $280 million. To the Snap Foundation, he and Murphy have promised to gift 13 million shares .His company, Snap Inc., is preparing for one of the most hotly anticipated IPOs of 2017 at a valuation around $20 billion. The Snapchat app is beloved by teens everywhere, and Snap's recently released Spectacles glasses are one of the most sought after gadgets in tech.
