(Founder and Chairman of FedEx Corporation)

Since FedEx is an American multinational conglomerate holding company that focuses on transportation, e-commerce, and business services, nobody in this room is unfamiliar with the term. Today, FedEx's air delivery service is its most well-known offering. FedEx Corporation, the largest transportation company in the world, was founded by Frederick Wallace Smith, who was born on August 11, 1944.  He is thought to be one of the world's most successful transportation entrepreneurs. Frederick Smith was the son of James Frederick "Fred" Smith and was born in Marks, Mississippi. Smith enrolled at Yale University in 1962. While going to Yale, he composed a paper for a financial matters class illustrating for the time being conveyance administration, on which he got a "C.".

Smith purchased Ark Aviation Sales, a maintenance company for aircraft, in 1970. By 1971, the company had shifted its focus to trading used jets. Smith founded Federal Express on June 18, 1971, with his inheritance of $4 million, or approximately $23 million in 2013 dollars, and venture capital of $91 million, or approximately $525 million in 2013. The company began providing service to 25 cities in 1973 with 14 Falcon 20 (DA-20) aircraft and small packages and documents. The creation of an integrated air-ground system was his primary focus.
