RADIA PERLMAN

(Invention of the Spanning-Tree Protocol (STP))

In 1951, Radia Perlman was born. She is a network engineer and computer programmer from the United States. She is best known for developing the spanning-tree protocol (STP), which is necessary for network bridges to function properly. Her innovations have had a significant impact on the self-organization and data movement of networks. Additionally, she made significant contributions to numerous other aspects of network design and standardization. Her mother was a trained mathematician who worked as a computer programmer, and her father worked on radar.

For his contributions to Internet routing and bridging protocols, Perlman was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2015. She currently holds over 100 issued patents and numerous prestigious computer science awards, including lifetime achievement awards and membership in the Special Interest Group on Data Communication of the Association for Computing Machinery. She came up with the TRILL protocol in recent years to fix some of the problems with spanning trees and make Ethernet use bandwidth to its full potential. She works for Dell EMC at the moment. Network Security is a co-authored work by her. Interconnections, a well-liked textbook for college students.
